What it means

The modern fastball is genuinely fast: a third of four-seamers reach 95-98 mph and another 8% cross 98. Breaking and off-speed pitches live far lower on the scale, sliders around 86.4 mph and curveballs around 79.9. Velocity also ramps up over the season, the four-seam median rising 0.4 mph from a 94.2 April to a 94.6 September.

Caveats & confounds

DESCRIPTIVE_ONLY; in-season velo ramp-up is a known physical effect reported as-is. Thin edge-of-season months (Mar/Oct) fall below the per-cell floor and vanish. Nothing here is modeled, forecast or priced.
